V.S.Z was founded in 1985. The aim of the society was, and still is, to exchange knowledge concerning treatment and sterilization of instruments and the handling of sterile medical devices. The society wants to promote quality standards for the Central Sterilization Department and sufficient financial strength to ensure a good infrastructure.

In order to achieve this a symposium is held twice a year. Also courses for C.S.S.D responsibles and Sterilization assistants are organized on a yearly base.

Currently the society counts 150 regular members, i.e., C.S.S.D collaborators and 30 special members or companies. 90% of the flemish hospitals are represented in the society. Since the start the focus of the society has been changed from the C.S.S.D responsibles towards all collaborators.
